Beverages » Summer Value Wines
TJ Douglas, Co-Owner of The Urban Grape gives approachable suggestions for great summer wines. There are various factors to bear in mind when choosing wines for a crowd, including: a range of guests' taste preferences, warm weather, and summer menu items. TJ gives three affordable suggestions that could serve as summer sippers or pair with smokey BBQ meats -- all under $15! Choose a crisp white wine from Sicily made from the "Insolia" grape -- perfect for fish and light seafood. A fruity Pinot Noir rose from Germany has a bit more body, and is excellent with salmon or tuna. Lastly, the Barbera grape from the Piedmont region of Italy will please your red wine-drinking guests, serving as the perfect summer red wine option that can even be chilled down a few degrees. The Barbera will be an excellent compliment to smoked meats or other straight-off-the-grill specialties.
TJ Douglas
TJ Douglas' career in foodservice started as a kid in Vermont who washed dishes to earn money "for mini golf and to take girls to movies." TJ has worked as a manager overseeing operations at a renown restaurant on Newbury Street in Boston. However, growing tired of working 90 hours a week in the restaurant business, he moved into wine sales, gaining knowledge of wine as well as industry connections through his many sales accounts. Today, he co-owns The Urban Grape with his wife Hadley, a boutique wine store that uses progressive shelving to make wine more understandable and approachable to all levels of wine drinkers. TJ and Hadley are excited to see their son grow up stacking bottles in the store and learning about people and the world through wine. They hope to create community, memories and joy when sharing their wine knowledge with customers.
